Pre-2018

2018: Reimagining A Yacht Sofa

The journey began in 2018 when we were commissioned to reimagine a salon yacht sofa. At the time, the client was working with a designer who recommended moving away from the original beige velvet upholstery in favor of a sleeker, silver-toned linen. The result was a more contemporary aesthetic, complete with skinny armrests, oversized base cushions, and an array of plush pillows that enhanced comfort while maintaining a minimalist appeal. 

However, since neither the designer nor our team had the opportunity to view the original sofa in place, the final piece presented a challenge. The reference photo we received failed to show the full corner profile of the beige sofa, particularly at the back. This led to a minor imperfection in the fit, especially in the back corner area. Despite this, the first version marked a significant aesthetic upgrade and was well-received at the time.

2018-2025

2025: Yacht Furnishings Refresh

Fast-forward to 2025, the owner decided it was time for a refresh. This time, the brief focused heavily on functionality as well as form. The designer specified a revised layout featuring three structured seats and six generously padded backrests, angled specifically for optimal TV viewing. This marked a shift from the previous pillow-centric design to a more ergonomic and tailored arrangement. 

To ensure the new yacht sofa would fit flawlessly, especially with the back corners, we digitally mapped the piece of furniture. By digitizing the layout, our team was able to capture precise dimensions and eliminate any guesswork from the fabrication process. This technology allowed us to align each element with the yacht’s existing structure, leaving no margin for error.

Yacht Cushion Foam Memory

As foam ages, especially in a marine environment, this means it no longer rebounds to its original shape, even after minimal use. Yacht cushions will end up feeling flat, lifeless or uneven – no matter how high-quality the outer upholstery may be.

When yacht cushion foam has exhibited memory loss, when pressed, it either doesn’t spring back or returns to a distorted, lumpy form. This loss of memory is particularly problematic for areas of the yacht where form and function must remain crisp.

Our Rebound Test

Foam 1: 7-Year-Old Drifast – The Least Bouncy

Drifast is a popular open-cell polyurethane foam designed for marine environments. Its main appeal lies in its fast-draining, anti-microbial properties – ideal for outdoor yacht cushions exposed to the elements. However, the 7-year-old Drifast tested showed the least bounce against the weight. Its structure, softened and compressed, offers little push-back. This yacht cushion no longer supported weight effectively and lacked form retention.

Drifast performs well short-term for drainage and mildew resistance, but its long-term memory retention and bounce are limited, especially without a firmer yacht cushion material beneath.

Foam 2: 7-Year-Old-MX + 1” Drifast Topper – Middle of the Pack

The second configuration combined 7-year-old MX foam, known for its structural integrity – with a 1” Drifast topper. While both materials had aged, the MX core retained some resilience. This combo delivered a moderate rebound, placing it squarely in the middle. The MX base provided structure, and the Drifast topper aided quick drainage for exterior superyacht cushions.

Pairing a fast-draining top layer with a firmer core extends the life of your yacht cushions, but memory degradation still occurs over many years.

Foam 3: 2-Year-Old Premium Foam + 2” MX Bottom Layer – The Clear Winner

The standout performer was a 2-year-old cushion built with premium high-resilience foam atop a 2” MX foam base. It showed exceptional rebound and outstanding shape memory. Even after repeated cycles, the cushion returned to its original contour instantly. This configuration combines the soft, luxurious feel expected of high-end yacht cushion material with the structural push-back needed for real support – ideal for both interior seating and exterior superyacht cushions.

Eclipse’s recommended standard for maximum durability and comfort is a dual-layer system – a premium top layer over a firm MX base. This superyacht cushion build demonstrated the best long-term performance by far.
